Is tap water really clean in Australia?
Generally, Australian tap water meets safety standards, but there are long-term health concerns. Recent tests have detected high levels of PFAS “forever chemicals” in the water, which have been linked to cancer and developmental issues. Tap water is also treated with chlorine, fluoride, and chloramine for disinfection, these chemicals can cause potential long-term health issues. Contaminants like pesticides, bacteria, and parasites may also enter the supply, leading to health risks. Additionally, old water pipes can leach toxic metals like lead and copper. So while Australian tap water is usually safe, these factors highlight the need for caution especially long-term consumption.
